Four of Five Government Hill Bears Euthanized

Four of the five Government Hill black bears who were spared in April have been euthanized after run-ins in Hope.

The bears took the spotlight after continually tearing up garbage this spring in Anchorage.

After a public outcry not to kill the bears, Governor Bill Walker asked if there was an alternative to killing them.

Officials then relocated the sow and four cubs to the Kenai Peninsula but were soon eating garbage again in Hope.

One of the yearling bears climbed into a van as a man sat in the front seat on Sunday, prompting state and federal officials to take lethal action.

One yearling remains at large.
