Four people were rescued from shore after their small airplane crashed in the waters northwest of Juneau Wednesday afternoon.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Meredith Manning says all four were transported to the hospital in Juneau for treatment of unknown injuries.

The pilot issued a mayday call, reporting the engine had died and he was going to attempt to land the Cessna 180 on the beach north of Berners Bay according to Manning.

The plane crashed in the water and upon responder arrival was not immediately visible. The passengers had made it to shore.

A Coast Guard and private helicopter landed on the beach and the private helicopter then took one passenger to the hospital.

The Coast Guard delivered the other three passengers to ambulances waiting at Juneau International Airport for transport to the hospital.

Manning reports the Cessna was flying from Juneau to Haines.
