Four State Wrestling Champions Crowned: A Pair From Kenai & A Pair From SoHi

Two Kenai Central wrestlers and two SoHi wrestlers battled to individual, weight-class championships at the 2015 4A Alaska State Wrestling Championships, held at Chugiak High School.

 

Kenai brothers Paul and Ellery Steffensen dominate the middle weights with championships in the 145 and 152 pound weight classes.  Paul won a 2-1 decision for the title; Ellery, a senior in his last competition, followed with a championship 3-0 decision and capped an undefeated 37-0 senior season.

 

SoHi’s Austin Craig captured the 113-pound weight class with a 3-0 championship bout.  Austin finishes the season with only one loss and a 31-1 overall record.  Seth Hutchison, holder of three, consecutive state championships, won his third with a 5-0 decision in the championship match at 120 pounds.

 

Other top performers included:

SoHi senior Ryan Winter, 3rd at 132 pounds

SoHi senior Bailey Blumentritt, 4th at 160 pouinds

Kenai junior Matt Vandermartin, 5th at 138 pounds

 

The Colony Knights amassed 264 points for the team title over runner-up South Anchorage; SoHi finished eighth and Kenai tenth in the team scoring.
