The Department of Health and Social Services announced 145 new cases of COVID-19 in Alaska over the weekend, combined across Saturday and Sunday’s reports.

Two of the new cases were Kenai residents, one of the cases was a resident of Soldotna, and one was a Homer resident.

The majority of the state’s new cases came from Anchorage where 66 residents were positive.

There are currently 3,150 active cases of COVID-19 among Alaska residents. 208 of those cases are residents of the Kenai Peninsula, a reduction of 35 active cases from two weeks ago. Among the current active cases, 60 are in Soldotna, 53 in Kenai, 31 in Homer, 28 in Seward, and 16 in Sterling.

The Kenai Peninsula’s rate of daily tests with positive results has near 0.9% on both Saturday and Sunday’s reports. The last time the rate of tests was so low was on May 25 when the rate was 0.9%. As recently as two weeks ago, the rate of positive tests was just under 3.0% during the weekend of August 15 and 16.

While a low rate of positive tests is good news, it also reflects a down-trend in the numbers of tests having been conducted. With the Kenai Peninsula only reporting 39 PCR and antigen tests over the weekend, that marks the smallest two-day total of tests since June 6 and 7.
