The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for freezing rain in effect from 1 p.m. Monday afternoon, December 26th, through 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, December 27th, for the Western Kenai Peninsula including the cites of Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, and Cooper Landing.
According to the the National Weather Service, Freezing rain is expected with total ice accumulations of a light glaze. Periods of very light freezing rain and/or drizzle are possible Monday morning. However, areas of steadier freezing rain are expected to develop by mid afternoon Monday and continue into late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Freezing rain is then expected to transition back to snow and linger across the area through the day Tuesday with 1 to 4 inches of snow possible by Tuesday night.
Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute. Slow down and use caution while traveling.
For those traveling between the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage, warmer air has moved into the eastern Kenai Peninsula (Whittier, Seward, Girdwood, and Moose Pass) and the Anchorage Bowl with any wintry precipitation having transitioned to all rain. Area roadways may still be icy due to rain falling onto surfaces that are at or below freezing. Rainfall may also lead to ponding on area roads, especially from Portage Valley through Turnagain Pass. Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution.
