The upcoming months will be the first summer that locals can participate in events on the recently renovated Soldotna Creek Park.

Last summer the park was off limits due to heavy rainfall from fall 2013.

Carmichael: “When you plant the grass, it takes a while for the roots to hold so we just had to protect it from that standpoint as best we could and let the ground firm up to where it would hold up to traffic. Now we’re kind of full bore, we’ve already started, we had the beer fest back in February and then we had the movie Frozen for a winter outdoor movie in March.”

Soldotna Parks and Recreation Director Andrew Carmichael said those kinds of activities are focused on getting peninsula residents out even in the winter months for fun activities.

The First Annual Frozen River Fest saw around 800 people and the viewing of the Disney movie Frozen brought out around 400 attendees, many of whom used the ice skating path created by the city.

Carmichael also detailed some upcoming activities in the park.

Carmichael: “Course we have the Watershed’s River Festival after a one year hiatus, although Centennial was a success the best place for it is right there in the city’s center, and then Progress Days, we also have an Alzheimer’s awareness event going on there, we’ve got the Kenai River Cleanup that’s happening in May and we’ve got the Wednesday Market is back so we’ll have that on Wednesday’s this summer. So we’re all over the board with things, trying to figure out what’s going on and trying to get as many people in there as possible outside of just going there to fish.”
