Fundraising for Soldotna Iron Mike Statue Surpasses $10,000

The fundraising efforts by local veteran groups to install an “Iron Mike” statue in Soldotna have surpassed the $10,000 mark.

Dave Carey is spearheading the efforts and says a September garage sale to raise funds was well attended.

Iron Mike is a de facto name of monuments honoring service men and women; the original statue was designed by Leah Hiebert in the 1950’s and placed outside of Ft. Bragg.

The Iron Mike Project began officially accepting donations on July 4, 2015 and hope to raise $48,000 by July 4, 2016 in order to install the five-foot-tall, bronze statue in Soldotna Creek Park.

The Soldotna City Council passed a resolution in January saying they supported the endeavor.
