Funny River Road Closure Due To Culvert Installation

Author: Nick Sorrell |

Funny River Road travelers are cautioned that the road will be closed to vehicles Wednesday, September 20th at MP 3.2 (from Kenai River Drive to Mann Drive) overnight from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. the following morning. Pedestrians and cyclists will be guided through the closure by project staff.

The closure is the result of the planned use of a crane to place part of a deep culvert. According to a post from the Alaska Department of Transportation, there is not enough room in the road for vehicles to pass while the crane set up.

The culvert installation is part of the larger Funny River Road Preservation Project, and road work will continue daily from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., with pilot car operations between MP 4.3 to MP 6.5 for paving. Expect 24 hour flagging operations for deep culvert work at MP 3.2 and excavation on both sides of the road between MP 7.1 to MP 7.4.

Travelers should expect a gravel road surface; motorcycles should use extreme caution.
