GCI is going to award $100,000 in scholarships to Alaska students.

According to a recent press release, 50 Alaska students will receive scholarships to help foster the next generation of STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) leaders. Forty Alaska students who have decided to pursue a career in STEM will each receive a $2,000 scholarship for the 2021-22 academic year through the GCI Scholarship Program, which can be used for tuition and books. An additional 10 scholarships will also be awarded to Alaska Pacific University students through the GCI Donovan Walsh Scholarship.

Josh Edge, Media Relations Specialist for GCI spoke to KSRM, “The scholarship program is nothing new for GCI. We have awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to hundreds of Alaska students over the past 20 years who have attended accredited colleges, vocational and trade schools across the nation.”

Applicants for the GCI Scholarship must be a graduating senior of an Alaska high school and must be seeking a degree or certification in the fields of science, technology, engineering, math, or business/innovation with the intention of returning to Alaska to start their career. Preference will be given to applicants who participate in STEM-based extracurricular activities, including E-Sports through the Alaska School Activities Association.

Edge speaks on supporting the next generation of leaders, “We recognize how important skilled workforce is to Alaska’s economy now and in the future. GCI, itself, we employ folks that are across the board in terms of professions. We recognize how valuable a skilled workforce is, especially in the STEM fields and in a place like Alaska that relies so heavily on science, technology, engineering and math and so many different aspects of our economy.”
