Alaska Communications’ wireless customers were switched to GCI last Saturday, April 11.

Morris: “It had to do with some data bases for a specific type of customer. It affected a couple hundred but we were able to remedy that within a couple of hours.”

 

He said many ACS and GCI customers have been calling just to make sure their accounts are working right and he suspects they will be sorting through minor issues for a bit.

 

As for long term plans, Morris stated they are turning their attention to constructing more cell towers and increasing LTE coverage.

Morris: “LTE is a different technology than what the ACS customers have been using in the past, the CDMA, so it’s a lot more data intensive, which means it can carry a lot more data and transmit a lot more data. For those sites we need to make sure that they’re connected with some sort of fiber optic connection to carry all the traffic. So we’re continuing to deploy LTE, not just in the Kenai Peninsula but also Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau to make the coverage area bigger.”

 

This transition followed the sale of ACS’ wireless customers to GCI which was finalized in February.
