Homer Electric Association’s Nikiski Combined Cycle Plant was dedicated just about a year ago helped HEA gain independence from  Chugach Electric Association.

 

Joe Gallagher with HEA said the Nikiski plant was brought online January 1, 2014.

Gallagher: “The plant is the cornerstone of our generation portfolio, it features a steam turbine in conjunction with the existing natural gas turbine that was there. Currently it has the ability now to produce a total of 80 megawatts of power.”

 

After the Nikiski Plant, the Soldotna Plant was brought online this year and is used as a backup, along with the Bernice Lake Combustion Turbine Plant.

Gallagher: “So what we’ve been doing since January 1, 2014, operating the Nikiski Plant is our cornerstone and also learning how to go back and forth between the other plants in the most economical and cost savings ways.”

 

Gallagher said the combined cycle plants use steam to generate power…

Gallagher: “The Nikiski plant is a combined cycle plant and what that means is that the plant is extremely efficient and we can use steam to generate power. So basically the steam with replace very expensive natural gas and that is a savings so over the long term Homer Electric Members will see a savings, we’ll be able to control better the cost of the natural gas.”
