Governor Dunleavy Optimistic About ‘Phase Two,’ Disappointed In State Legislature

Governor Mike Dunleavy held a press briefing on Friday, May 8. He was joined by Dr. Anne Zink, Alaska’s Chief Medical Officer. They offered details on new cases, as well as the Governor’s disappointment in the Alaska state legislature for failing to move Federal CARES Act money to its allocated homes.

 

The Governor addressed the passing of former Lieutenant Governor Byron Mallott, offering condolences and ordered the U.S. flag and Alaska state flag to be flown at half-staff for seven days starting May 8 through sunset Friday, May 15.

 

He then offered a broad-strokes summary of Alaskan COVID-19 numbers, saying that the numbers are strong and continue to drive the progression of Phase Two of re-opening the state’s economy. The Governor also reiterated that the state is constantly monitoring COVID-19 numbers as this process continues, and will act accordingly as things continue to progress. His demeanor was optimistic and positive, with the state’s active case count being among the lowest in the nation.

 

With regards to Federal CARES Act money, the Governor repeated notes from earlier this week where he expressed his disappointment in the state legislature for not accomplishing the task of releasing the funds as he appropriated them in a timely manner.  He has previously expressed confidence in how his administration allocated the federal funds, but the approval of the release of the money continues to sit in the Alaska legislature. With the legislature in recess, Dunleavy said his administration is “all-ears” to find ways to get the money to Alaskans, but that the situation is in the hands of the legislature. He tweeted with the hashtag #AKLegFail earlier in the day.

 

Governor Dunleavy concluded the conversation by saying that things may never get back to what we previously knew as “normal,” but that right now, he wants residents to do their best to stay away from people that are not family members, wash down surfaces as much as possible, and to not be confrontational about masks as they are only meant to help the community and establishments: “We can, in fact, be a model on how to get through a pandemic in 2020. We’ll get there together. It may look different, but I’m an optimist. Alaska’s future is incredibly bright.”
