Governor Mike Dunleavy signed an administrative order addressing the evolving energy needs of Alaska. Administrative Order No. 340 creates the Office of Energy Innovation, which was issued amid the recent destabilizing global events that have stressed the importance of energy independence, in addition to recognizing the economic impacts that come from domestic energy production.
“We have tremendous energy opportunities here in the state of Alaska including wind, solar, hydro, tidal, geothermal, micronuclear, and hydrogen, and probably more to be discovered,” according to Governor Dunleavy, who held a press conference recently addressing the subject. “The office of Energy Innovation will coordinate this pursuit of energy that is sustainable, dependable, and affordable.”
The Office of Energy Innovation is formed to develop policies that help Alaska capitalize on its energy potential to lower the cost of energy and improve the stability of energy delivered to Alaskans; to collaborate with the public and private institutions to develop solutions; assist communities in accessing technology and funding to secure low cost reliable energy; and support efforts that enhance the state’s role in the energy future through developing a critical minerals mining program and investing in emerging energy technologies.
“This Administrative Order builds and reaffirms the work the State of Alaska has already undertaken with our partners here today and will contribute to economic growth and job creation, and as we accelerate transition to a clean energy economy,” added Curtis Thayer, AEA’s Executive Director. “The state’s energy office at AEA is committed to ensuring that all Alaskans have access to safe, reliable, and affordable energy.”
The Administrative Order takes effect immediately and will utilize existing personnel and resources within the Office of the Governor.
