Governor Bill Walker and Alaska’s First Lady Donna Walker will appear in Seward on Friday as a part of his statewide meet and greet circuit.

Seward City Manager Jim Hunt said the governor will meet with him, the city mayor and other administration.

Hunt: “In the long-term we’ve been trying to address Lowell Canyon and the flooding issue up there and the threat it poses to Seward. I’ve met recently with the DNR Commissioner and others and we’re always working with the Army Corps of Engineers trying to address this issue. [The Governor] asked that this be one of the things that he could take a look at and see what we could do to work together and address that issue.”

The City of Seward declared a state of emergency after flooding in the fall of 2012 and concerns remain present that sort of event could happen again.

There will be a meet and greet for members of the public to talk with Governor Walker.

City Clerk Johanna Kinney…

Kinney: “It’s just a brief hour, kind of a public meet and greet. The Chamber of Commerce and myself have thrown it together as just a real casual mingling type thing.”

Refreshments will be provided.

The meet and greet is open to anyone who wishes to attend and will be held at 239 Sixth Avenue in Seward from 5:30 – 6:30 pm.
