Governor Bill Walker has vetoed the bill that would have locked the state into partnership in the Alaska LNG Project until a series of milestones would be reached.
He kept good on his March 2 promise that he would not pass that bill as soon as it was introduced.
Gov. Walker: “You know, historically, I’ve always said I’d wait until it gets to my desk, today I’ll say I would veto this in a minute. This is the most unAlaskan thing I’ve ever seen put together.”
That began the back and forth between the governor and legislature to find a way to forward the project but not to “tie Alaska’s hands” in the process.
In a release today the governor said “We continue to have multiple meetings to ensure AKLNG is successful and remains the priority while maintaining access to a backup option.”
That backup option referred to is the Alaska Stand Alone Pipeline, which shares much of the same route from the North Slope as the AK LNG to Nikiski.
