Commercial fishermen are growing older and not being replaced by a new generation, according to research coming from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The results of a multi-year study indicate fewer young fishermen are filling the ranks around Kodiak and Bristol Bay, since the industry offers little job security or financial reward, but there are plenty of personal and professional risks.
Researchers say they hope to bring forward policy changes which would help revitalize the industry.
According to research done by Masters student Danielle Ringer, the average age of fishing permit holders in Alaska is 50. In the 1980’s, the average age was closer to 40.
