Gusting Winds Anticipated Throughout Kenai Peninsula

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for gusty northerly winds that will affect all of the Kenai Peninsula.

While the winds died down overnight, strong gusts are anticipated today.

The brunt of the weather system is anticipated to hit Seward, Whittier, and Valdez tomorrow, coinciding with President Barack Obama’s visit to Seward.

The NWS warned residents that trees and branches falling on homes and power lines could be an issue.

The also urged anyone burning debris or using camp fires to use caution as the winds are unpredictable and can spread fires rapidly.

The strong winds have also resuspended volcanic ash from the 1912 Katmai Volcano eruption and the NWS suggested anyone who is easily impacted by poor air quality should stay inside.
