Fire personnel are monitoring the Halfway Island Fire, located 150 yards offshore from the Gull Rock trail west of Hope. The island is approximately 2 acres and has no structures or values at risk.
The Halfway Island Fire is being managed as a “limited” fire management option as identified in the Chugach Land and Resource Management Plan and Alaska Interagency Fire Management Plan. The involved actions will be coordinated with the associated values at risk and fire fighter safety. Weather and fuel conditions have moderated in the past week and there is no current or expected threat to the mainland.
The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center Wildland Fire Dashboard reports that the fire is 0.80 acres in size. The fire that started on June 5 still continues to smolder and creep, remaining contained on its island.
Authorities want the public to be aware that they should not attempt to access the island as an area closure is issued by the Chugach National Forest. The fire poses no current threat to the mainland.
No cause for the fire has been determined.
