Harsh Weather Pauses Shell Arctic Drilling

Royal Dutch Shell PLC paused its exploratory drilling off Alaska’s northwest coast Wednesday because of high winds and waves.

 

Spokesman Curtis Smith says he’s not sure when the drilling will resume in the Chukchi Sea.

 

Shell’s semi-submersible drilling unit the Polar Pioneer began work July 30 and remains anchored to the drill site.

 

 

The harsh weather that paused drilling is also affecting operations on shore: Shell is temporarily relocating staff at its Barrow based housing camp.

 

Smith said the road used to transport people to the camp is restricted to one lane because of high water and may become impassable.
