The Kenai Peninsula Borough will host a hazardous waste collection day on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Homer Transfer Facility in Homer.
This is a free event for households; any businesses that hope to dispose of anything will be charged a fee. If a household has over 55 gallons or more, they must pre-register.
This is the third hazardous waste collection day for 2024 at the Homer Transfer Facility.
This event is offered to minimize harmful toxins entering the landfill. Hazardous Waste is scheduled throughout the year at the Homer Transfer Facility Collection Days, the Central Peninsula Landfill, and the Seward Transfer Facilities.
According to Lee Frey, the Solid Waste director for the Kenai Peninsula Borough, this event happens four times a year. It is a great opportunity to properly dispose of hazardous materials instead of putting them in the landfill, where they can have long-term, negative effects.
“So, antifreeze, hazardous liquids, chemicals, pesticides, things like that that you’ve been storing around your house, if you’d like to bring those in. We get a lot of paint on these days, so we can bring those in at these times. There’s no charge for residents for disposal. If you have any questions, you can call the solid waste department or our contractor of US Ecology that runs the event,” says Frey.
Some of the other hazardous materials include automotive batteries, non-automotive batteries (limit of up to 40 lbs daily/max 220 lbs per month), pesticides and herbicides (up to five gallons or up to 40 lbs), photographic chemicals (up to 5 gallons or up to 40 lbs), resins and adhesives (up to 5 gallons or up to 40 lbs), and used oil.
Wastes not accepted include explosives (ammunition, blasting caps, gunpowder) and reactives (sodium metal, radioactive wastes).
