In 2009 the State Division of Oil and Gas studied the possible reserves hidden in Cook Inlet and came up with some exciting conclusions. Acting Director Paul Decker says there may be untold pockets of oil and gas hidden just offshore…

Decker: “Certainly we identify at least a trillion cubic feet of gas in those existing fields even now. Then there’s a very different category of resource, that’s the undiscovered resource potential that the US Geological Survey and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the federal government, what they try to estimate. The undiscovered resource in their mind, there may be up to 19 trillion cubic feet of gas in the basin yet to be discovered.”

 

Since 2009 the Department has been studying the 7 largest fields and Decker says they now think those reserves are 440+ BCF more than estimated five years ago. To find those deposits…

Decker: “That’s going to take a lot of hard work. Seismic, exploration wells, thorough flow testing of those wells to actually verify the indications that you get as you’re drilling. You need to actually flow test those wells in Cook Inlet before you can be confident that they’ll actually yield gas. So a lot of hard work.”

 

For last year’s legislative briefing, DNR estimated another 1.1 TCF in the Inlet’s 28 fields and 355 BCF in undeveloped gas resources in the Beluga, Grayling Sands, and North Cook Inlet Units.
