High Avalanche Danger Warnings In Chugach Mountains

The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center has issued an avalanche forecast for December 27th for the Chugach Mountains.

According to the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center, the avalanche danger remains HIGH as a warm storm continues to impact the area. Rain, snowfall, and strong wind has been overloading the snowpack. Many natural avalanches were seen yesterday (Dec. 26th), which may continue through today (Dec. 27th). Human-triggered avalanches will be very likely. Travel in and below avalanche terrain is not recommended.

Alpine, Treeline and Below Treeline elevations are all recording High Risk Level 4 warnings.

According to the Friends of the Chugach Avalanche Center, a natural avalanche cycle is occurring. Several avalanche paths along the Seward highway from Bird to Portage have recent avalanche debris in the bottom of the guts. Also, the Five Sisters path shows recent avalanche activity.
