High School Hockey and Basketball Open Seasons On January 11th With Opening Of Peninsula Schools

The opening of Kenai Peninsula Borough schools to onsite-at-school instruction and the re-opening of school facilities for academic and athletic use allows for the re-start of high school athletics which use indoor facilities, hockey and basketball, and the enactment of regular season schedules to begin on Monday, January 11th.

 

Strap on your skates and lace up your Nikes; high school hockey and basketball on the Kenai Peninsula are back!

 

With the announcement on Tuesday by the KPBSD, athletic directors and coaches will now be charged with developing, instituting and monitoring mitigation plans which will strictly administer both the athletic teams and the spectators and personnel involved with the sports.  According to SoHi Athletic Director Kyle McFall, mitigation plans are in the process of being approved at the district level.

 

Kari Dendurent, KPSAA Executive Secretary (Kenai Peninsula School Activities Association) released a list of guidelines approved by KPSAA for the re-opening of hockey and basketball (Nordic Ski is already practicing and preparing for a January 16th).

The KPSAA Update includes:

Practice begins January 11th with first contests according to schedules

Mitigation Plans are required

Masks are required for practices and competitions

Spectators– Limited to 2 per athlete, except seniors for Championship Games  **KPBSD is considering not allowing spectators to start the season. This will be determined in our mitigation plan review.

No travel off Kenai Peninsula

Cheerleading– no stunting or tumbling (will re-evaluate at a later date)

 

Athletes must compete all necessary paperwork and forms and have a current physical on file.  Athletes must also comply with ASAA guidelines and eligibility requirements.  Athletes must be academically eligible.
