High School Hockey Season Start Suspended Until October 24th

The Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) passed-on a decision on Monday to delay the start of the 2020-21 high school hockey season, overriding the Kenai Peninsula School District mandated delay to the hockey season.

ASAA, the governing body for school activities in Alaska, re-established the starting date for high school hockey to Monday, October 26; changed from the original calendar date of October 14th.  The KPBSD had moved the start date for peninsula teams to October 19th, due to covid concerns; ASAA’s change supersedes the district’s mandate.

The change to the first practice date also effects the regular season schedule, with teams requiring a minimum of ten practices before competition.

The new timeline will result in the cancellation of the Peninsula Ice Challenge which was scheduled for October 29-31 at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex and the Kenai Ice Rink.  An additional complexity to the regular season is the Mat-Su School District extending its ban on inter-district travel.

Stay tuned for hockey schedule updates.
