A high-speed police chase along the Seward Highway on Tuesday resulted in the capture of an Anchorage woman who operated a stolen vehicle while allegedly intoxicated.
The Alaska State Troopers initiated the incident by trying to stop a blue Honda CRV for speeding at 84 mph in a 65 mph zone at Mile 71 of the Seward Highway on March 25. The driver sped up after troopers turned to perform the stop and continued driving without stopping, which started the pursuit.
According to troopers, the SUV exceeded 100 mph while performing reckless driving maneuvers and passing through oncoming lanes multiple times. During the pursuit, the vehicle approached a near-head-on collision with a semi-truck.
During the active pursuit, the Honda CRV was discovered to be a stolen vehicle from Girdwood. At Mile 45, a different trooper gave the vehicle a tire deflation device, but the deflation did not stop the vehicle. Three troopers formed a box formation to stop the SUV, ending the pursuit.
The authorities identified 31-year-old Kiana Harris of Anchorage as the driver. The authorities confirmed that Harris operated under substance influence while possessing controlled substances within her vehicle.
The incident resulted in no reported injuries. The Alaska State Troopers expressed gratitude to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service for their help during the operation.
The authorities transported Harris to the Wildwood Correctional Facility, where she received multiple charges for failure to stop and vehicle theft, theft and misconduct involving controlled substances (MICS), and driving under the influence (DUI).
