Projects of the K-Beach High Water Drainage Task Force are moving slowly but the group is still working on its mission to educate.

Hydrogeologist Jim Munter will present at tonight’s(May 5) borough assembly meeting in Soldotna.

Munter: “One of our top recommendations is to put together a feasibility study to understand better why such severe flooding occurred and what the alternatives are to try to address that flooding to prevent or at least reduce damages in the future.”

He said a part of that education is dispelling myths about why the flood happened as well.

Munter: “A lot of folks think that these problems are caused by people building in wetlands and I hope to dispel that notion, I think it’s kind of an urban or suburban or rural myth. Most folks built their homes in areas that are upland, that are well treed and not recognized as any kind of a wetland but the flooding was so severe that overland flow came from other places far up gradient and inundated a lot of properties.”

Munter is scheduled to present at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting which will start at 6 pm in Soldotna in the assembly chambers.
