Hockey Associations Deal With Rink Closures & COVID Restrictions

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

In reaction to Governor Dunleavy’s address to the state of Alaska on Friday and the continued high positive testing results on the Kenai Peninsula, the City of Soldotna and the City of Kenai addressed usage of area ice facilities including the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex and the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility.

The Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association (KPHA Ice Hawks) and the Northern Knights Hockey Club of Alaska are both impacted by tighter restrictions, mandates and rink closures.

The City of Kenai, according to the city’s Facebook posting…

“The City of Kenai is taking action to address public access to City facilities in response to Governor Dunleavy urging Alaskans to take immediate action to slow COVID-19. These steps are necessary in light of the rapid spread of cases across Alaska and the increasing cases on the Kenai Peninsula and allows the City to maintain critical services.  The Kenai Ice Rink will remain open to use; however, effective Monday, November 16, use will be restricted to Central Kenai Peninsula participants only. Kenai parks, open spaces, and trails will remain open.”

The City of Soldotna announced on Thursday, November 12th the temporary closure of the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex effective Friday, November 13th.  See story at radiokenai.com for details.

In response to both of these actions, the Northern Knights HCAK and KPHA Hockey Communities will adjust to comply to changing guidelines.

According to the KPHA Ice Hawks Facebook page…

1. The Soldotna Sports Center is currently closed until further notice.
2. The Kenai Multi-Purpose Ice Facility is open ONLY with STRICT adherence to mitigation plan and for use by Central Kenai Peninsula participants only. The City of Kenai reserves the right to take immediate action if WE(as a collective hockey community) do not abide by the plan.
What this means to all of us:
We choose to comply
-or-
we say goodbye to our hockey season.
Do your part!
We must arrive to the rink fully dressed!
All people must sign in!
All people must wear a mask!
Locker rooms remain closed!
All people must maintain 6 foot distance and no congregating (arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before scheduled event; depart immediately after)
We are fortunate to even have the opportunity to have a rink open.
Let’s pull together to be able to continue to play the game we LOVE-HOCKEY!!!!!
HCAK and KPHA Hockey Communities”
