The annual Clarke Cockrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan opened play on Thursday with the Soldotna girls, Soldotna boys and Nikiski boys joining a field that also includes Chino, California in the girls bracket and Lewis & Clark, Washington, Philomath, Oregon and Bishop Blanchet, Washington in the boys bracket.
The tournament includes two, eight team brackets with games scheduled Thursday – Saturday.
First Round Tournament Results
SoHi Girls 71 – Craig 30
The Soldotna Star girls opened the tournament with a 71-30 victory over 2A Craig from Southeast Alaska. Brittani Blossom lead the Stars with 22 points and Aliann Schmidt added 18, Ituau Tuisaula, 12 points and Danica Schmidt, 11 points.
SoHi Boys 54 – Philomath, Oregon 56 OT
Philomath scored the game winner at the buzzer in overtime following a missed freethrow by SoHi. The game was tied at 51 after regulation. Ray Chumley lead SoHi with 18 points.
Nikiski Boys 26 – Lewis & Clark 71
The Nikiski Boys fell behind early and never recovered from a 32-11 halftime, falling to Lewis & Clark High School from Spokane, Washington 71-26. Shane Weathers lead the Bulldogs with 9 points. Nikiski will play Bishop Blanchet of Seattle on Friday inthe10:45 a.m. game; Bishop Blanchet lost to Palmer 47-46 on a last second basket for the Moose.
