Home Depot has confirmed that its payment data systems were breached sometime in April which could potentially affect customers nationwide.

Home Depot spokeswoman Paula Drake told us Home Depot representatives are not commenting on the situation at this time and that all the available information is in their press release.

Home Depot has taken aggressive steps to address the malware and however the full scope scale and impact of the breach is yet to be determined. Thus far there is no evidence that debit PIN numbers of Home Depot customers were compromised.

The company has also offered free ID protection including credit monitoring services to any customer who used a credit or debit card at a Home Depot from April 2014 until now. No customers will be held liable for fraudulent charges in their names.

Home Depot is also rolling out the EMV “Chip and PIN” program by the end of this year in response to the increasing threat of cyber-attacks on chain stores.
