Two volunteers from Nikiski and one from Homer were among six Alaskans recognized this week by First Lady Rose Dunleavy during the 2025 First Lady’s Volunteer of the Year Awards ceremony in Juneau.

Elaine Bakk and Amber Douglas of Nikiski, and Ash-Lee Waddell of Homer, were honored for their deep commitment to service, representing decades of volunteer work that has shaped and supported their communities.

Elaine Bakk was recognized for nearly 50 years of volunteerism focused on mentorship, parenting support, and spiritual guidance for women and children in crisis. Known for stepping in without hesitation, Bakk has worked quietly but powerfully across every Alaska community she’s lived in.

Amber Douglas was praised for her leadership on the Nikiski volunteer fire board and her role in building local youth sports, especially through the Nikiski Hockey Club. Her fiscal work has helped maintain emergency services, while her dedication to youth programs has helped give local children a strong sense of community.

In Homer, Ash-Lee Waddell was honored for her resilience and commitment to service, even through personal hardship. She has regularly volunteered at her siblings’ school, helped distribute holiday food baskets, and supported others in need through her example of quiet strength and care.

“These volunteers remind us what it means to step up when others need help,” said First Lady Rose Dunleavy. “Their service makes Alaska stronger.”

The First Lady’s Volunteer Awards were established in 1974 by Bella Hammond to recognize Alaskans who exemplify a spirit of giving and community support. This year’s ceremony was held at the Governor’s Residence in Juneau.
