Homer’s Atz Kilcher, star of the Discovery channel’s “Alaska: The Last Frontier”, is working through the permitting process to construct an art retreat near Kachemak Selo, an Old Believer Russian Orthodox village.
He has applied to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources for permission to build a number of permanent buildings at a site at Fox River where young people can gather to work on art projects.
A two-story barn, cabin, bunkhouse, workshop, and outhouse are included in Kilcher’s plan for the site where campers could work on singing, poetry, painting, and other art for several days at a time.
He says the plans are still being finalized, ultimately they are based on the hopes that the wilderness in the Fox River area, which resides at the headwaters of Kachemak Bay, will connect children to their art.
