Cross country skiers from Homer, SoHi and Kenai opened the new year with competition at the Homer Invitational held at the Lookout Mountain course.
A unique format for the high school skiers with racers facing a 4-kilometer skate, a 50-yard dash and ski change, then a 3-kilometer classic style leg.
SoHi’s Tania Boonstra topped the girls field and led the Stars to the team title; Boonstra complete the event in 29:19.81; followed by teammate Ariana Cannava in 29:56.56 and Kenai’s Emily Moss in 32:02.97.
In the boys competition, Jody Goodrich posted the fastest combined time in 24:13.38, followed by Homer’s Garrett Briscoe. Kenai’s Jack Laker placed fourth at 25:03.96. The Homer boys topped the team scoring followed by SoHi and Kenai.
