The Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center announced the Grand Opening of the Spit Visitor Information Center located near the Fishing Hole on Homer Spit Road. It’s located in what was the former longtime Halibut Derby Shack, commonly referred to as the ‘cabin with the red door’.
Brad Anderson, Executive Director for the Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center:
“The building on our spit is part of the Jackpot Halibut Derby shack. We’ve been doing that program about 34 years. That’s where we did all the weigh-ins and sold those coupons. In 2019, that particular program ended and so we’re converting that little cabin into a visitors center right there on the spit so we can try to help promote more visitor information about what’s all going on throughout Homer in addition to just points of interest on the spit.”
Anderson says that there is an open house scheduled for Thursday, July 1st at 4:00 p.m.:
“So on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. we’re going to have a little celebration along with Harbormaster’s office Bryan Hawkins. The Harbormaster will be there. We’re going to dedicate this new version of our building out there so we’ll be bringing the public in, let them come out and understand what we’re trying to do with that and officially get it launched with it’s new purpose.”
