Homer Police were alerted early Sunday that a portion of road near the Homer Spit was sloughing off.
Lt. Will Hutt said Kachemak Drive about a 1/2 mile from it’s intersection with the Spit Road is still closed.
Hutt: “Water had seeped underneath the road bed in that area and it sloughed off or washed out.”
The offices, businesses and part of the old Homer Airport are still accessible by a detour through town.
Hutt said he wasn’t sure what created the massive hole in the road but the State Department of Transportation is working to determine the cause and fix the road.
He said the biggest trouble is keeping those who would like to take pictures away from the area.
Hutt: “People are wanting to walk up and look at it. I’m just concerned about equipment operators and people walking around past the road signs.”
