The COVID-19 public health emergency has impacted annual events for over a year, but one event is aiming to keep going in 2021. The 67th Annual Winter Carnival Weekend in Homer is taking place this weekend, starting today and ending on Sunday.

According to a release from the Homer Chamber of Commerce, they want the carnival weekend to celebrate the winter season while encouraging residents to shop local, dine local, and play local.

Jan Knutson with the Homer Chamber of Commerce offered details to KSRM on Friday: “It is the 67th annual Winter Carnival celebration! So, this is a great tradition here in Homer. It is a combination. Usually we have a parade. This year, we are not – for some very obvious reasons – but there are a lot of other activities during the long weekend where businesses offer specials, there are festivals, it is the time for all of us to shoo out the winter! It’s also time that many people come down, especially from Kenai and Soldotna, because we have some of the very, very best restaurants here, the accommodations here, there’s some specials for Alaskans, and it’s just a wonderful time for all of us in this community and for visitors to just come and get a sampling of what all is happening in Homer!”

On Saturday, ice car racing will be taking place at Beluga Lake. Also, there will be pop-up activities along Pioneer Avenue. On Sunday, Wynn Nature Center will be holding Family Fun Day. Also, the Snowmads Sweetheart Snow Machine Run will take place Sunday morning at Snowmads Jones Parking Lot at 9:45 a.m. AJ’s Steakhouse will also be hosting a Valentine’s Day dinner.
