Hope Community Resources Planning Sterling Intentional Community

Hope Community Resources is planning to build a neighborhood in Sterling known as an intentional community for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

 

Seven Kenai Peninsula families have been discussing the idea over the past three years according to Hope’s Executive Director Roy Scheller.

The community would be an assisted living space for individuals 18-years or older; along with caretakers, the residents would help each other live and grow.

 

Scheller said some individuals are interested in having businesses in the community.

Hope Community Resources purchased a 20-acre parcel from the Salamantof Native Corporation for a  low price of $50,000 and Hope will finance the housing units if the board approves.

 

Scheller said Hope would like to break ground this fall to construct at least two residences before the holidays however there are still a number of hurdles to clear.

 

Applications may be taken from individuals interested in living in the community however Scheller said the goal of the community is to remain small so each the community’s members can care for each other.
