A robotics demonstration at the Central Peninsula Hospital’s new River Tower on Wednesday showed new technology that can help patients with limited mobility due to spinal injuries, strokes, or other ailments.

Regional Sales Manager Matt Cuellar with EKSO Bionics says recent advancements have been made in the company’s smart assist software.

Cuellar: “It really allows patients that have a certain amount of power to not only be able to do more activities but do it more efficiently. It’s also a technology that helps therapists not have to strain so much working with lower functioning patients so it’s really a win-win not only for patients but also for therapists to hopefully give them a strong tool to make their job a little bit easier.”

The exoskeleton technology is a type of wearable robot that costs around $180,000, which includes four years of service on the unit and training for physical therapists who providing them to patients.

Austin Reese is an ambassador for EKSO Bionics who has used the “suit” since 2014 due to an incomplete spinal cord injury.

Reese: “Some of the benefits that I find by using the EKSO is that I still maintain muscle function, I’m able to maintain better flexibility, and I’m able to be up and walk and stand and talk to people.”
