House Asks Senate to Buck Governor’s Juneau Mandate

The State House is asking the Senate to agree to a two-week recess, contrary to Governor Bill Walker’s Juneau mandate…

Gov. Walker: “There were three items on the call and we said two of them could be taken up in Anchorage, we’d be comfortable with that but we don’t want them to leave without a funded budget so if they could do that one that would be it.

Under the House resolution, finance committees would continue to meet while the rest of the legislators would return to their communities until May 12. Lawmakers insist the full membership isn’t needed for the budget discussions and the daily floor sessions distract from the issues at hand.

The measure passed 24-13 on the third day of the Governor’s special session.

Under the constitution, both chambers must agree before they can adjourn or recess for more than three days. The Senate must now pass the resolution.
