House Democratic Minority Supports Longer Sessions

Talk from the House Democratic minority has indicated they support returning to longer legislative sessions, stating concerns about the pace some bills are moving and opportunities for public comment.

Rep. Max Gruenberg of Anchorage disagrees saying it is not in the best interest of the Legislature’s leadership return to longer sessions.

The 90 day sessions started in 2008 after voters in 2006 approved changing the length of regular session from 121 days to 90 days.

Republican Senate President Charlie Huggins proposed the idea of alternating session lengths, with 90-day sessions in even-numbered years and budget sessions during odd-numbered years that would last as long as needed to finalize state budgets.
