The Alaska House passed a joint resolution to support the “full and fair exoneration” of the late U.S. Senator Ted Stevens.
House Joint Resolution 15 follows a decision that upheld the reversal of suspensions for two federal prosecutors accused of withholding evidence in Stevens’ trial over corruption.
It was found by the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board that the U.S. Justice Department mismanaged the disciplinary process against those prosecutors.
HJR 15 denounces that finding and asks various bar associations to determine if any prosecutors were involved in misconduct as far as rules of professional conduct.
Supporting the resolution is also viewed as honoring Stevens’ legacy.
The late Senator was found guilty by jury in 2008 but in 2010 the decision and case were dismissed amid the prosecutors’ conduct allegations. Stevens died in 2010 in a plane crash.
