House, Senate Negotiators Agree on Cruise Ship Tax Provision

House and Senate negotiators agreed on a provision Thursday that would put a stop to the state distributing cruise ship passenger taxes to communities where ships stop.

 

During an operating budget conference committee, Senator Anna MacKinnon says there have been concerns over equity raised and distribution issues that need to be looked at.

 

She asked communities that the proposal might impact to weigh in on it.

 

By current law, the state’s share of the taxes collected is reduced by the amount of municipal head taxes charged by Juneau and Ketchikan.

 

Earlier in the session Governor Bill Walker proposed the repeal of that credit for local taxes but that stalled in the regular session.

 

The final operating budget has not yet been finalized so the issue may be revisited.
