House Votes to End School Bond Reimbursements

The State House yesterday passed a bill which would end state reimbursements for school bonds for the next five years.

The bill was hurried ahead of an Anchorage vote on April 7 which would make the state liable for part of a $59 million package. However, the move to expedite the law failed by three votes, so it will now take 90 days to become law.

The State has typically helped municipalities foot the bill for school maintenance and construction bonds. With an ever-tightening budget, lawmakers decided to pause that practice for five years and then downscale the share that the state will pay.
