A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Western Kenai Peninsula. The National Weather Service issued the advisory on Sunday, Jan. 5, forecasting freezing rain and total ice accumulations of a light glaze.
According to the advisory, the areas around Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, and Cooper Landing can expect very slippery sidewalks, roads, and bridges are possible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.
The advisory is in effect from 9:00 a.m. Monday to 3:00 a.m. Tuesday.
The NWS says that a series of storms will bring considerably warmer weather and a chance of precipitation to the area today through Tuesday. Rain is most likely to spread into Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley from Monday afternoon through Monday night. While temperatures may rise above freezing, surface temperatures are likely to remain below freezing due to recent cold weather. Untreated and snow-covered roadways and other surfaces that remain below freezing are expected to become extremely slick.
