Iditarod Ceremonial Start Set for Saturday

The 50th running of Alaska’s Last Great Race, the Iditarod, will feature a ceremonial start on Saturday, March 5th in downtown Anchorage and the traditional race restart in Willow on Sunday, March 6th.

 

The 2022 Iditarod currently includes 17 women and 31 men, made up of 13 rookies and 35 veterans.  The 2022 field also includes five past Iditarod champions and includes mushers from 12 different countries.

 

The ceremonial start is scheduled for 10 a.m. on 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage.  Teams will complete an 11-mile leg before loading-up for the restart in Willow.

The Iditarod restart will be on Sunday in Willow scheduled for 2 p.m.

 

Mushers with Kenai Peninsula Ties

Dallas Seavey from Seward and currently training in Talkeetna.  Dallas is a five-time champion of the Iditarod, the youngest Iditarod champion.

Mitch Seavey, from Seward, is a three-time Iditarod champion (2004, 2013,2018)

Travis Beals, from Seward, was named most improved musher in 2015 and finished 5th in 2019.

Anna Berington and Kristy Berington, formerly from Kasilof and now training in Knik.  Kristy’s best finished was 16th in 2019; Anna’s top finish was also in 2019 with a 17th-place finish.
