Iditarod Sled Dog Race Hits The Southern Route On Saturday

The 2023 running of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, the Last Great Race, is set with 33 teams of mushers and dogs ready for the ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 4th.

 

The 51st running of the Last Great Race on Earth includes 24 Alaskans, 4 international mushers, 9 rookies, 24 veterans and 2  former champions.  The field of mushers is made up of 25 men and 8  women.

A ceremonial Bib #1 will honor four-time champion Lance Mackey and will lead the mushers from Anchorage.

Jesse Holmes will wear bib #2 and will be the first official team on the trail.

 

The official re-start of the Iditarod is Sunday, March 5th at the Willow Community Center with the first team to hit the trail at 2 p.m.

 

Thirty-three teams, including 2022 champion Brent Sass, are entered into the 2023 Iditarod; the race will cover the Southern Route from Anchorage to Nome, a total distance of 998 miles.
