The 49th running of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race opened with 46 teams heading out from the Deshka Landing start line onto the 860 mile, round-trip Gold Trail Loop.

Nicolas Petit, former champion of the Tustumena 200, holds the early lead as the first team into the Finger Lake checkpoint. Petit arrived at Finger Lake at 3:05 a.m. Monday followed by Richie Diehl at 3:08 a.m. Monday. Four-time champions Martin Buser and Dallas Seavey have reached Finger Lake in 10th and 11th, only five minutes separate the two teams.
