As we head into one of the busiest weekends of the summer, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reminds Alaskans to dispose of fish waste properly.

 

Southcentral Information Officer Ryan Ragan said the first of the two categories that fines can be issued under is littering.

Ragan: “Illegally discarding fish waste like dumping it in an open lot for example it could be construed as littering.”

 

That fine can cost up to $1,000.

 

The second category is negligent feeding of wildlife.

Ragan: “Meaning like if you put it in a trash can outside your house and it’s sitting there and a bear comes up and gets into it. There’s been reports in the news anyway for people being cited for that specific fine because they leave their trash out that attracts bears or other wildlife.”

 

The Central Peninsula Landfill takes fish waste for free and is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:45 pm.
