Inspectors Seek Review Of Second Hilcorp Pipeline

Federal inspectors have issued a second proposed safety order to the owner of an underwater pipeline spewing processed natural gas into Alaska’s Cook Inlet.

 

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration says an oil pipeline owned by Hilcorp Alaska LLC is subject to the same stresses as the leaking gas pipeline.

 

The proposed order calls for inspections of Hilcorp’s oil pipeline.

 

Hilcorp’s natural gas pipeline has been leaking since mid-December. The company estimates 193,000 to 215,000 cubic feet is leaking daily.

 

Hilcorp says ice in the inlet that’s home to endangered beluga whales makes it too dangerous to repair the pipeline immediately.

 

The pipeline sends natural gas from shore to petroleum platforms.

 

Hilcorp spokeswoman Lori Nelson says the company will work with inspectors to ensure a timely response to concerns.
