The International Pacific Halibut Commission has voted to increase the total allotted amount of Alaskan halibut catch.
During their January 30 meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia the Commission increased Alaska’s total catch to 21.2 million pounds for the upcoming season, up from 19.7 million pounds in 2014.
That increase is divided between multiple areas, including commercial and charter halibut sectors and their wastage.
That means commercial fishermen in southeast and southcentral Alaska will see a small increase in quota.
The commission monitors sport-caught halibut but does not limit it.
