A security company and Chinese tech group revealed Sunday that they had found the largest Apple hack ever, possibly affecting 225,000 Iphone users.
Security firm Palo Alto Networks and Chinese technology group Weiptech say the malware is mostly targeting “jailbroken” Iphones.
Jail-breaking an iPhone allows owners to access file systems in their phones that are typically restricted for security purposes.
The malware found targeting those jailbroken phones is called KeyRaider; it’s designed to intercept users’ iTunes log-in details and send them to a remoter server.
The hackers aren’t just keeping the information for themselves, it is also being shared.
For anyone who did not jail-break their iPhone, researchers at Palo Alto Networks say they don’t have to worry about KeyRaider.
For anyone unlucky enough to have downloaded the malware that is mostly found in Chinese websites and apps that provide software for jailbroken iPhones, the malware could be worse than someone else’s stolen iPhone apps showing up on your bill.
Palo Alto Networks says that in some cases it’s also found evidence that the malware can be used to lock phones and hold them ransom.
